What a tree health check involves

A proper tree health assessment is more than a glance from the driveway. We start on the ground, working around the whole tree: reading the canopy density and leaf condition, checking the trunk and root zone, and sounding the wood to pick up hollows you can’t see.

Where the tree warrants it, we go up. An aerial inspection means a qualified arborist climbing the tree and checking it from the inside: cavities and hollows, decay pockets, cracks, and unions that are starting to pull apart. We climb rather than fly a drone over it, because you can’t sound a trunk or probe a cavity from the air.

Why the view from up high matters

Most people only ever see their tree from the ground, and from down there you’re seeing less than half the picture. You can’t see into the unions where branches meet, you can’t see the top side of a limb, and you can’t see what’s happening in the upper canopy at all.

That’s where an aerial inspection earns its keep. Problems that are invisible from your back door are often obvious from inside the canopy, and catching them early often means a pruning job instead of an emergency.

A big tree isn’t automatically a dangerous tree

One of the most common worries we hear: the tree is tall, it leans over the house, so it must be a risk. Size on its own doesn’t make a tree dangerous. A healthy, well-structured large tree can be safer than a small one full of decay.

What actually matters is condition: the health of the wood, the strength of the unions, how much dead material the tree is carrying, and whether the species is prone to failure. That’s what a health check measures, and it’s why the answer is sometimes “your tree is fine”.
